Nutrient-rich smoothies support everyday nutrition for older Australians

As aged care providers face greater scrutiny on preventing malnutrition and supporting residents’ health under Australia’s strengthened aged care quality standards, The Pure Food Co has released a range of nutrient-rich smoothies designed for older adults.

The nutrition specialist which supplies more than 600 aged care homes across Australia developed the smoothies to give residents a nutritional boost at any time of day. Each serve contains 10g of protein, 4g of fibre, more than 25 per cent of an older person’s recommended daily calcium intake and more than 700kJ of energy, helping residents maintain their nutrition between meals.

The Pure Food Co’s Australian Director Chris Deed said the range reflects growing recognition that good nutrition is fundamental to healthy ageing.

“Much of the conversation around nutrition in aged care has focused on people with swallowing difficulties, and rightly so,” Chris says. “But every older person has increased nutritional needs as they age. Maintaining muscle strength, supporting bone health and preventing malnutrition matter for every resident.”

The smoothies take a food-first approach, delivering nutrition in a familiar, enjoyable format rather than a clinical supplement. Served at morning tea, as an afternoon snack or an evening refreshment, they bring together taste and nutrition in a way that is simple for care teams and enjoyable for residents.

Compared with a typical homemade smoothie, each serve delivers substantially more protein, fibre and calcium in a smaller volume, making it easier for residents to finish.

For kitchens, the practical detail matters. “The one-litre cartons can be stored in snack fridges and simply poured as needed, reducing preparation time and food waste while giving homes a consistent, nutritionally balanced option throughout the day,” Chris says.

“For busy kitchens and care staff, it’s a simple solution. For residents, it’s an enjoyable choice that helps support their health.”

The smoothies are available in Tropical and Chocolate flavours, with Mixed Berry to follow.
